Exile and Restoration

The theme of living as exiles was a significant one for the Israelites. So much of their history had been shaped by living as exiles in many different cultures, with a deep longing for the promised kingdom to come. It was probably a familiar feeling for them to live within this tension. For the new Gentile converts, living as an exile would have been jarring for them to live in a way that was counter to the cultural and religious expectations of their day. Peter reminds them all that, even in exile, Christianity is a movement of hope.
