Webers in Rwanda: September 2024 Missions Update

(1) Family church before going to a local church service; (2) visiting in Bweya with the archdeacon of the Rokomo archdeaconry and the local parish pastor; (3) Shiloh turned 6! (4) It’s standing room only at the Cathedral—being the only church the remains open in Gahini, Christians in the area from all denominations attend service on Sundays.

In March 2023, we sent out Ben and Cherie Weber—and 6 of their children—as missionaries with our sister diocese in Gahini, Rwanda. Their role is to strengthen our mission partnership and relationship with our sister parish through Friends of Gahini! Each month, they send an update of their ministry work and life as a family adapting to a new culture. If you’d like to receive their monthly updates to your inbox, you can sign up here!

“I wish we had happy news of ministry and growth, but instead we will share the things that are heavy on our hearts.” In this month’s newsletter, the Webers share about the challenges of ministry and life in Rwanda as church closures continue, the outbreak of the Marburg virus (for now Gahini has not been impacted), and the physical need for rain. On a happier note, Ben and Bishop Manasseh look forward to traveling to the US at the end of October to visit with partnering churches. You can find their praises and prayer requests below, and read the whole update with more photos and details here!

Praises:

  • Homeschool is going very well so far this year. It is fun to hear Shiloh reading short stories!

  • The Friends of Gahini churches in the USA were able to encourage their partner churches here by supporting their pastors in September.

Prayer Requests:

  • Pray for the Bishop and pastors as they continue to navigate this difficult time and seek to minister to the people of Gahini.

  • Pray that the Marburg disease will stop spreading and that no one else will die from this terrible disease.

  • RAIN!

After sending out the newsletter, the Webers sent out an update with the following prayer request:

Hi friends,
This morning, Rift Valley Academy called to tell us that due to the CDC raising the travel advisory to Rwanda to a level 3,
they deemed it too risky to allow Mae to travel to Rwanda [for school break]. They suggested that we go to Kenya to be with her during her break. As you read this, Cherie, Conor, and Abigail are on their way to Kenya via bus. One of Mae’s guardians has offered us the use of their home, which is such a blessing. Please pray for their safe travel and for their time with Mae to be refreshing for all of them.
Thank you for walking along with us in prayer.
